Metropolitan Mine has been part of the community since in 1888 as a coal and railway town. The mine has shaped Helensburgh’s history and remains an integral part of the Illawarra region.
Peabody has owned and operated the mine for nearly 20 years and has over 140 years of mining experience including six decades in Australia.
Metropolitan Mine has lodged a modification to operate until 2031 and is preparing a State Significant Development (SSD) application to continue operations west – away from the Woronora Reservoir – to 2044.
The SSD will secure the mine’s future with certainty, safely unlocking steelmaking coal for Australia’s steel industry and customers overseas.
A long-standing supplier to domestic steel production in the Illawarra, Metropolitan also supports around 400 local jobs and pays coal royalties to the NSW Government that fund essential services across the state.
Metropolitan Mine is located beside the Royal National Park and the Woronora Reservoir catchment area and is committed to protecting the unique local environment.
The mine manages its activities through comprehensive and independently monitored environmental management plans for the upland swamps, waterways and cultural heritage.

Metropolitan Mine operates approximately 500 metres underground using highly conservative mining layouts designed to prevent and minimise any potential surface impacts.
